Sibelius Academy’s doctoral and licentiate studies take place in a doctoral school. There are two doctoral schools. The DocMus doctoral school is located in the faculty of classical music, and a corresponding doctoral school is located within the faculty of music education, jazz, and folk music. A student should direct his/her application towards the doctoral school that correlates with his/her desired studies and degree.
Together, these two doctoral schools form Sibelius Academy’s Doctoral Academy. The Doctoral Study Programme for Performing Arts in Finland also participates in the operation of the Doctoral Academy (as of 2012 with two separate doctoral programmes). The Doctoral Academy is a platform of co-operation for the doctoral schools and the research school (doctoral programmes). Its executive board includes representatives from the doctoral schools, the Doctoral Study Programme for Performing Arts in Finland (as of 2012, two doctoral programmes), and the highest executives from the university.
A student studying at either school is able to choose courses from a broader selection offered by the Doctoral Academy. The completion of courses will be agreed upon with the arranging party. A student will also be able to complete studies at other university-level institutions. The terms of completion will be agreed upon separately.
