To enrol in the actual doctoral programme, students are required to submit an application for the right of study and a doctoral study plan (project plan) for approval by Academic Council no later than 24 February 2012.
Applications must be send only by electronic mail to doc-applications(at)siba.fi.
The free-form application and the doctoral study plan (project plan) should be addressed to the Academic Council. In addition, those applying to the doctoral Development Study Programme are required to enclose the following documents:
1. A project plan,
outlining the applicant's objectives in developing as a professional and contributing to his/her field; the project content and final projects. The recommended length of the plan is approx. 10 pages.
(Extent of studies is 165 ECTS credits.)
2. A plan for theoretical and practical studies,
with an approximately equal measure of both.
(Extent of studies is 75 ECTS credits)
3. Applicant's personal details and contact details
4. Curriculum vitae or equivalent
5. Description of earlier degrees and studies and other matters that the applicant considers relevant to his/her eligibility for the doctoral programme.
Before submitting the doctoral study plan, students are advised to discuss its content with the relevant professor.
The doctoral study plan must show that the intended studies are in accordance with the objectives set out in the Decree on University Degrees (794/2004).
Applicants can put forward their own suggestions on the academic supervisor and group members in their study plan.
Instructions for applying to the arts-oriented DocMus development study programme as a doctoral student
Applicants to the DocMus Development Study Programme are advised to carefully review the description of the Development Study Programme in the Sibelius Academy directions for doctoral degrees (in Finnish).
Applications and attachments must be addressed and submitted via email to the Sibelius Academy Academic Council at doc-applications(at)siba.fi by 24 February 2012.
The free-form applications to the arts-oriented Development Study Programme must include the following items:
1. Letter of application
The letter of application must include the following information:
- Applicant's name and contact details.
- An application to the doctoral study programme addressed to the Sibelius Academy Academic Council.
- A statement that the application is for the Doctor of Music degree, the intended programme is the development study programme with an arts-oriented specialisation, and that the application is addressed to the DocMus Doctoral School.
2. Doctoral study plan
If the applicant so wishes: An abstract of the project (= a short description of the development project of a maximum of one [1] page)
Doctoral study plan
2.1 A short description of the applicant's reasons and resources for doctoral study and his or her motivation and goals for individual professional development and for the development of the field.
2.2 A description of the development project, which must include the following information:
- An account of the need for development and the background of this need
- The immaterial objective or goals of the development project. These objectives can be, for example, new visions or skills.
- A description of the process of the development project, i.e., what will be done, and how the project will bring the objective closer.
- How the functionality of the methods, materials, etc. produced in the project will be tested, and how the test results will be utilized.
- A list of equipment or other objects that will be produced in the project. These objects will be physical (concerts, recordings, music editions, teaching material, online material, etc.).
- Demonstration of proficiency
The plan must provide an idea of the type of the demonstration of proficiency that will be used to display the results of the project so that they can be evaluated. The demonstration of proficiency must show that the objective has been reached and that the nature of the degree is arts oriented. The demonstration of proficiency must also include a report on the project as an entity and the process. If the demonstration of proficiency includes several parts, the plan must establish how they are interconnected and form an entity.
2.3 Plan for supportive studies. Supportive studies consist of practical and theoretical studies that are relevant to the project. They must include studies in the philosophy of art and science worth 15 ECTS credits. It is not necessary to define individual courses, but a plan of the type and amount of studies is needed.
2.4 Schedule: A study plan detailing the time allocated for courses and the order in which they will be completed.
2.5 The applicant may wish to include a reference list of key literature in the field.
