Doctoral studies

The doctoral degrees at Sibelius Academy are Licentiate of Music (LMus) and Doctor of Music (DMus). Doctoral studies offer three options: Research, Artistic and Development Study programme. The Development Study programme comprises theoretical and practical specialisation in a particular issue within the music field. It is a study method that gives the student new, applicable skills that are useful in the field of music.

Students eligible for doctoral studies are those who hold a Master of Music degree or an equivalent degree previously obtained at Sibelius Academy.  Eligibility may also be based on other preceding studies, provided the applicant is regarded by the Department Council or Board as possessing the potential for successful completion of doctoral studies.

The aim of doctoral studies is to give the students a thorough understanding of their field, capabilities for high quality performances that demonstrate a mature approach, and capacity for independent creative work in their field, as well as for the development of the field.
