Rector Tuomas Auvinen

On 16 April 2012, Tuomas Auvinen will assume the responsibility of managing the daily functions and strategic planning of Sibelius Academy as well as the development of the organization and its policies.

Tuomas Auvinen has a PhD in Arts Management and an Executive MBA qualification. He has experience in academia and culture management as the CEO of the Association of Finnish Theatres and as the Executive Director of the Finnish National Theatre. Auvinen will start as the new rector of Sibelius Academy as of April 2012.



The rector's three-year term began on January 1st, 2010.

Artistic Rector Gustav Djupsjöbacka

As of April 2012, Gustav Djupsjöbacka will be engaged in special duties related to the management of artistic activities and the development of societal networks, collaboration projects, and the university's international relations.

Gustav Djupsjöbacka has been Sibelius Academy's rector since 2004, and before that he, was a Lecturer in Lied Music from 1988 onward. He was awarded a Piano Music Diploma from Sibelius Academy in 1977 and completed his Doctor of Music degree in 2005.

Vice Rector Jari Perkiömäki

The 1st vice rector is responsible for bachelor- and master-level studies, adult education, and the Junior Academy.

Jari Perkiömäki worked as an instructor of jazz from 1987 to 1997 and as a lecturer from 1997 onward. Before Perkiömäki became a dean, he was the head of the Department of Jazz from 2000 onward. Jari Perkiömäki is a Doctor of Music.


Vice Rector Kari Kurkela

The 2nd vice rector is responsible for research and doctoral studies.

Kari Kurkela has worked at Sibelius Academy for a significant amount of time in various teaching and researching positions, specialising in doctoral studies. He has been a Professor of Music Performance Research since 1989. He has a PhD and was awarded a Piano Music Diploma by the Academy.
