Doctoral music education studies support themes of reform for the field, the field's theories, and research tasks that will critically renew and correct paradigms. The objective of doctoral studies is to develop critical meta-thinking and increase readiness to build a career as an international researcher. Doctoral studies place a special focus on international discourse on music education and research skills. Students will complete some of their studies at other universities that specialise in art and sciences. Students are encouraged to complete part of their doctoral studies at foreign universities. Sibelius Academy also makes an effort to integrate doctoral students into the programmes's other activities by utilising each individual's expertise. Additionally, doctoral students participate in activities that the subject group organises for various interest groups. Currently, doctoral researchers in the music education subject area are studying subjects such as distance teaching of music, aural skills books for choirs, the Idol competition from the viewpoint of singing pedagogy and preparation of a music performance as a tool for power and empowerment.
