The purpose of the basic study of folk music is to give students practical and wide proficiency in historical playing and singing styles and making modern folk music, in addition to familiarising them with folk music research.
The bachelor-level study takes about three years, and the following master-level study about two and a half years. Available major subjects include vocal studies, kantele, violin, accordion, keyboard, guitar, mandolin, wind instruments, harmonica, percussion, bass or other instrument studies. It is also possible to complete instrument courses and other study modules in various Sibelius Academy departments and play in various dance and theatre projects. The basic studies emphasise musicianship, but students can also direct their studies toward becoming a pedagogue or a researcher.
