Department of Composition and Music Theory

The Department of Composition and Music Theory provides instruction in the music theory and composition of classical music. Students of composition and music theory can major in either composition or music theory. Currently, there are approximately 50 students in the programme, of which 30 students major in composition and 20 in music theory. In addition to the core activities, the department is engaged in different artistic, scientific, and pedagogic projects. For students of music theory, it is possible to combine theoretical knowledge with practical musician's skills. Accordingly, all students receive instrument tuition. As a result, composition and music theory graduates have a wide variety of career options in the music field.

The Department of Composition and Music Theory provides students who major in other programmes at Sibelius Academy with minor courses in composition, music theory, music analysis, history of Western music, music philology, and research. The department is also in charge of language studies at Sibelius Academy, except for some special courses for vocal music students. The department currently employs three professors, four docents, 13 lecturers, and approximately 20 part-time instructors.
