Strings

At the Sibelius Academy, students can study violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Instrumental skills, both for solo, chamber ensemble, and orchestral roles play the most important part in the curriculum. Students participate in orchestras from the very beginning, first in the ranks of a string orchestra and, during the second year of study, in a renowned, full-scale symphony orchestra. Performing is an essential part of the curriculum, and the newly introduced Helsinki Music Centre and many other performing stages invite students to perform.

Master's of music graduates from the Sibelius Academy know the essential repertoire, styles, techniques, and interpretations of their respective instrument as well as the key orchestra repertoire of Western art music. During optional studies, students can deepen their skills by participating in audition training, training for acting as the principal of strings / playing parts, or training for orchestra leaders/concertmasters. In pedagogy studies, students familiarize themselves with teaching their respective instrument, from the beginner to professional level.

String instrumentalists educated at the Sibelius Academy work as professional pedagogues in Finnish music education and as orchestral, chamber musicians, or soloists. They are employed regularly by domestic professional orchestras, and many have made a career overseas; for instance, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, London Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Filharmonier, and Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester have chose current and former string instrument students of the Sibelius Academy to join their ranks.
