At Sibelius Academy, jazz graduates study toward doctoral degrees in the Arts Study Programme, the Research Study Programme or the Development Study Programme. The doctoral degrees are Licentiate of Music (LMus) and Doctor of Music (DMus). By autumn 2010, four students had completed doctoral degrees in the jazz programme of Sibelius Academy.
The publication series of the Sibelius Academy jazz programme was launched with two doctoral studies. Jarno Kukkonen explores the jazz-rock phase of Miles Davis in his book Early Jazz-Rock, The Music of Miles Davis, 1967-72. Jari Perkiömäki's study Lennie and Ornette discusses the music of two improvisation pioneers, Lennie Tristano and Ornette Coleman.
