The Nordic Master of Global Music
GLOMAS

The Nordic Master of Global Music (GLOMAS) is a two-year Nordic master’s programme in global music. It is a joint study programme created by the Sibelius Academy (Finland), the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus (Denmark), and the Malmö Academy of Music (Sweden).

GLOMAS is an innovative, interdisciplinary study programme. It offers students the unique opportunity to study and deepen and develop their artistry and technical proficiency at their home university and on joint courses in the Nordic countries and by, for instance, doing fieldwork. Graduates will be prepared for professional work all over the world. The courses are held in English, and the main aim of the programme is to develop musicians’ skills to combine performance and research practices from different music cultures and to offer tools for multicultural music pedagogy.

The aim of the programme is to respond to new needs arising from globalization in the field of music. It covers topics relevant to the career of today’s professional musician, including such areas as project management, musical leadership, and applied research. The programme will also offer opportunities for fieldwork via partner institutions in Africa and elsewhere. Through joint projects, students can create a wide network of contacts in the international music field, offering them greater career opportunities. The first GLOMAS students began their studies in August 2010. Each partner institution has its own admission procedures. Bachelor degree holders can apply. The programme’s language is English, and it comprises 120 ECTS credits (in Finland, 150 ECTS credits).
