Separate Doctoral Degree Programmes
The folk music and popular music doctoral study programme is part of the Doctoral Programme for Music and Performance Arts. The central mission of the doctoral study programme is to combine the various research, trends and traditions in folk music. The main research trends are folk music and popular music research. The emphasis is on researching music history and cultural changes. The study programme aims to create research practices that combine scientific and artistic approaches in researching music history.
Started in 2007, the Doctoral Programme for Music and Performance Arts has two doctoral study programmes working side by side, identical to the previously started Doctoral Study Programme in Folk and Popular Music and the national Doctoral Study Programme in Performing Arts. Professor Vesa Kurkela has been in charge of the graduate school.
Two new music graduate schools will start in 2012: The Doctoral Programme in Artistic Research in cooperation with Sibelius Academy, Aalto University's School of Art and Design, Academy of Fine Arts and Theatre Academy, and the national Doctoral Programme in Music Research in cooperation with Sibelius Academy, University of Helsinki, University of Tampere, University of Turku, University of Eastern Finland, University of Jyväskylä and Åbo Akademi. Professor Saha is a member of the former programme's steering group, and Professor Kurkela is in charge of the latter programme.
